COP TALK

Your Meadows Place Police Department periodically receives complaints from residents regarding parking issues. Our streets can become congested when people choose to park on the street, and some of you might believe it should not be allowed at all.  However, state law does not prohibit it. Sometimes we create parking problems without meaning to, and often times simply thinking before we act prevents us from parking illegally. Basic courtesy and respect for others who live in our community and use our streets goes a long way. This month I would like to emphasize a few laws from the Texas Transportation Code that govern parking on our streets:

1. No parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant

2. No parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection

3. No parking within 30 feet on the approach to a STOP sign

4. Park with your right-hand wheels parallel to and within 18 inches of the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway

The first one is easy to understand – nobody wants to be the person blocking a fire truck from accessing a fire hydrant. The next two deal with safety and with limiting visibility at intersections. The fourth law is also for our safety. It is designed to prevent drivers from crossing oncoming traffic both when they park and when they pull away.

We hope you have taken the time to read this, and you will remember that safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together to keep our streets as safe as possible.
